Career Development
The division believes that we can support career development and academic success of our fellows and early faculty through policies for protected research time and mentorship. Additional protected time for research may be a key factor in realizing greater productivity from fellowship research and in the generation of preliminary data for career development awards (e.g., NIH K-series awards).
Fellowship level. In the UCSF neonatology fellowship program, we offer a fourth year of research to all fellows in the basic science, clinical investigation or EPI/Health Sciences/Policy tracks.
Junior faculty level. At the junior faculty level, there is flexibility to accommodate individuals that want to prioritize protected time for research. The Clinical Instructor series allows a maximal allocation of research protected time, whereas the Adjunct Assistant Professor series is suitable for faculty at a slightly more advanced stage and may already have achieved career development award funding.
Refining expectations and course correction. Because established standards for clinic vs. research/protected time are a “work in progress” nationally, the division supports active discussion and will respond to the input from early stage junior faculty. For example, faculty that held K08 and K23 awards recently convened to review pure academic programs in Neonatology and recommend standard for clinical allocation for K awardees (6 weeks on-service time in the ICU plus total of 24 night calls/annually). In response, the division administration has adjusted schedules to comply.

Supporting successful neonatologist-investigator role models. In this and other ways, the division seeks to optimally support academically-oriented neonatologists and provide strong role models for the physician-scientist and clinical investigator. We prospectively track metrics, such as research publications and successful applications for NIH funding.
