Biography

Dr. Roberta Ballard,  Professor of Pediatrics, UCSF School of  Medicine has had a long career in research, teaching and administration in field Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

After completing postgraduate training and fellowships in Neonatology at the University of Chicago, Stanford, George Washington University, and the Cardiovascular  Research Institute(UCSF), Dr. Ballard was appointed as the Director of Newborn Services at {then} Mt Zion Medical Center(now Mt Zion Medical Center of UCSF) from 1972 to 1991.In 1992, she was appointed Chief of the Division of Neonatology andNewborn Services at the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania(CHOP), and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and was Attending Neonatologist in the Infant Intensive Care Unit and the Newborn /Infant Center. She is currently Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Ballard has devoted her career to research in the diseases of the newborn, most specifically in the treatment and prevention of chronic lung diseases(CLD)in premature infants.  She is currently Principle Investigator in a multi-center trial pioneering treatment for BPD(bronchopulmonary dysplasia) for extremely low birth weight infants.

Dr. Ballard has published articles in the NEJM, Pediatrics, Journal of Perinatology and other medical and scientific publications.She is a sought after as a visiting professor and as a speaker for national and international conferences and has served on numerous scientific and medical boards.
