UCSF Fellowship Training Program in Neonatal Neurology

This is a 1-3 year non-ACGME accredited fellowship program that is designed to meet the needs of child neurologists and neonatologists who are interested in advanced training for a clinical or academic career in neonatal neurology. Fellows are funded for the first year of the program and must seek additional external funding if they wish to pursue a second and third year.

Clinical Excellence UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital is has innovated the concept of the Neonatal Neuro-Intensive Care nursery. The 48-bed nursery admits over 150 neonates with neurological conditions each year, and is the largest cooling center in Northern California. The objectives of the first year of training are to become proficient in the diagnosis and management of the neurological disorders that present in the newborn. Fellows are expected to provide clinical service for the Neuro-Intensive Care Nursery services as well as participate in specialized rotations in neurodiagnostics and research.

Research In years 2 and 3, fellows are matched with a senior faculty scientific mentor in either clinical research or basic science. Those fellows who choose a clinical research track are encouraged to apply for the Master’s Degree Program in Clinical Research that is offered by the CTSI, which is a two-year course of study intended for graduate and professional students, clinical residents, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty members who wish to master clinical research methods and pursue independent research careers. Fellows who wish to pursue basic science research will be matched with one of a number of neuroscience or neurodiagnostic laboratories.

Strong Mentorship There is an active research program in neonatal neurology that includes epidemiology research, brain imaging, neonatal neurocritical care, neurophysiology and involves many members of the Divisions of Child Neurology and Neonatology.
