Our Mission

The mission of the UCSF Division of General Pediatrics is to improve the general health of children worldwide and in our communities

• Providing outstanding clinical care
• Training the next-generation of pediatricians
• Discovering better ways to prevent, screen and treat childhood disease and
• Being an active and engaged member of our community.

Our Goals

• Be recognized by our families, colleagues and peers, as providing high-quality pediatric primary care for our patients and families.
• Play a key leadership role in providing the best pediatric primary care education and training for our medical students, residents, fellows, post-doctoral students and peers.
• Develop nationally and internationally recognized research programs in primary care pediatrics, particularly in prevention, screening, continuity of care, best practices for well-child care and the role of family, community, culture and policy in influencing child health.
• Be recognized and sought after as the leading experts by community, state and national policy-makers regarding matters of general pediatric health and health care
• Be recognized as the best “well-rounded” division of general pediatrics in the country. 

Division Leadership

Valerie Flaherman, MD, MPH
Division Chief of General Pediatrics

Dr. Flaherman is a Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UCSF, where her research program focuses on preventive interventions for healthy newborns in the U.S. and globally. Her work spans a range of study designs, including longitudinal, randomized controlled trials, and basic science, with a special focus on breastfeeding and lactation. Dr. Flaherman is a committed mentor for trainees and junior faculty and currently serves as Director of UCSF's Academic General Pediatrics Fellowship.
