How to Apply

The Application Process

The Department of Pediatrics will be conducting our applicant season virtually to support the public health measures and recommendations from AAMC and ACGME. The Applicant Experience provides an overview of the clinical rotations, a meeting with Margaret McNamara, MD, our Program Director, individual interviews with a faculty member, fellow or resident, Q&A with residents, and virtual tours of the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and Zuckerberg San Francisco General.

Interviews will be scheduled in November, December, and early January after our selection committee reviews applications. We will send interview invitations to you by email, so be sure to indicate your preferred email address(es) on your ERAS application.

Please note, if you are a graduate of a medical or osteopathic school other than those in the US or Canada, you must follow different procedures before applying to the program (Application Procedure for Graduates of International Medical Schools).

All application materials must be submitted via ERAS.

Note: The basic components of your application (the Common Application Form, transcript, USMLE scores, 3+ letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and the MSPE) must be received in late September 2022 (exact date TBD).

All programs within our residency are selected via ERAS—ACGME ID # 3200521040.

Apply | Categorial Pediatrics

The Categorical Pediatrics Program, also known as General Pediatrics Program, is NRMP code 1062320C0.

Apply | Child Neuro Program

Please visit the Child Neurology Program for application information.

Apply | Combined Pediatrics/Medical Genetics and Genomics Program

This program matches one resident every other year. We will accept applications for this position in the fall of 2023.

Please visit the Combined Pediatrics/Medical Genetics and Genomics Program for application information.

Apply | Molecular Medicine Program

The Molecular Medicine Program is a separate program within Pediatrics and has its own NRMP code for application: 1062320C2.

The Molecular Medicine Program matches 3 4 residents per year. Those applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to and productivity in biomedical research are encouraged to consider the molecular medicine option. Applicants who are selected to interview for this program will be notified by email and invited to participate in interviews, in addition to the interviews for the standard categorical program.

The Molecular Medicine interviews will allow candidates to meet with potential investigators in their field, as well as members of subspecialty program leadership and current participants in the pathway. The Molecular Medicine Program is fully committed to enhancing diversity at UCSF. Applications from under-represented ethnic/cultural groups are strongly encouraged.

Apply | PLUS Program

The PLUS Program is a separate program within Pediatrics and has its own NRMP code for application: 1062320C3

The PLUS program matches five residents per year. As you become more familiar with the UCSF Pediatric Residency Training Program during the application season, you may choose to add or delete the General Pediatrics Program or the PLUS program based on your training goals.

Since the PLUS program has a significant overlap of core educational experiences with the General Pediatrics program, many applicants who are primarily interested in PLUS typically apply to both programs. The deadline to add PLUS in ERAS is in late January 2023 (exact date TBD).

Note: Applicants to the PLUS program are required to submit a supplemental essay about their interest in the PLUS program.

Letters of Recommendation

ERAS allows four letters of recommendation to be sent to our program in addition to the required MSPE. We highly recommend that one of these letters be from the Chair of your Department of Pediatrics or the equivalent (the Director of the Pediatric Residency Training Program, the Pediatric Clerkship Director, etc.).

Additional letters of recommendation should be from faculty members who have worked with you in a clinical setting or who know you well from research, other scholarly projects, community experiences, etc. We encourage you to submit letters of recommendation that give our selection committee the broadest possible view of your qualifications and attributes.

We require three letters of recommendation in addition to the Dean's letter; you may submit an optional 4th letter of recommendation without penalty.

USMLE Scores

Successful completion of USMLE Step 1 is required for application to the program. It is strongly recommended that applicants take USMLE Step 2 CK early enough to have passing scores available for review by our Selection Committee by mid-February 2022.

Other certifying examinations (such as COMLEX) are not acceptable substitutions for this, nor are they required.

Photographs

Photographs are NOT required to complete your ERAS application. If you choose to submit a photograph, you may do so at any point in the application process timeline through ERAS.

Applicant Socials

Interviewed applicants are invited to join us for an online Applicant Social where you can meet our residents in a more informal setting. More information about socials will be made available to applicants invited for interviews.
