Clinical Conferences

Several clinical conferences designed for all Neonatology Fellows and faculty are scheduled at various times as described below:

Perinatal Conference (weekly) is held jointly with the Obstetrical and Obstetrical Anesthesia Services. Upcoming high-risk cases as well as a review of interesting cases of the past week are discussed.

Fetal Therapy Conference (weekly) is held jointly with Pediatric Surgery, Perinatology, Diagnostic Ultrasound, MRI and Pediatric Cardiology. Cases discussed include patients referred to the Fetal Treatment Program from throughout the United States as well as follow-up of those patients who have undergone fetal operative procedures.

Fellows Core Currriculum Conferences (biweekly) are devoted to a selected curriculum of perinatal and neonatal subjects. These are presented by faculty from the Neonatology Division as well as other divisions in Pediatrics and other departments at UCSF.

ICN Morbidity and Mortality Conferences (monthly) is a review of all deaths and complications during the preceding month and is a joint conference together with Pediatric Surgery which includes slides and reviews of autopsy specimens presented by a UCSF pathologist.

Perinatal Morbidity and Mortality Conference (monthly) is a joint conference with the Obstetrical Service and includes a review of the perinatal statistics of the previous month as well as a detailed discussion of a particularly interesting perinatal case.

Fellow’s Research Seminar (monthly) – Conducted jointly with fellows and faculty from the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. 1st and 2nd years prepare 30 minute presentation/summary of research projects. Presentations may consist of actual experimental results, or (in the case of some 1st year fellows), a literature review and research hypothesis with proposed methods of study. 3rd year fellows will prepare a full research presentation.

Practice Sessions Scientific Conferences (annually with abstract acceptance) - Fellow and faculty members presenting research at annual Scientific Meetings (eg, SPR/PAS) present their abstracts in the prescribed format for practice and feedback from the entire division.

ICN Clinical Consensus Conference (once per fellowship in the 1st year). Topics of interest are identified by the Division and assigned to fellow/faculty mentor pairing, who prepare a systematic overview of existing literature, controversies and current opinions. Protocols based on “best evidence” are proposed to the Division for discussion and debate. Consensus statements are then generated and applied to clinical practice at UCSF hospitals with the goals of minimizing inconsistency while improving patient care and medical education.

Transport and Neurointensive Care (NICN) Case Conferences - Ad hoc reviews of morbidity and mortality for cases transported to UCSF or specific to the Neurointensive Care Nursery patient population. Conferences always include a didactic teaching session. Held jointly with the Division of Pediatric Critical Care or Child Neurology.

Neonatology Journal Club (monthly) involves review and discussion of selected articles by a Fellow. Each Fellow is responsible for presenting at one Journal Club per year.

Follow-up Clinic Case Conference (once per fellowship in the 3rd year) -Each 3rd year fellow will select and present a patient from follow-up clinic whose care they have been involved with over the three years of fellowship. Cases will be approved by the Follow-up clinic preceptor and presented in a case format.

Other conferences which are primarily for physicians on clinical service include Radiology Rounds (three times a week), Social Service Rounds (weekly), and House Staff Teaching Conferences (weekly). Second year Fellows present neonatology subjects at this last conference.
