Follow-Up Care
The Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) Follow-Up Program assesses the neurodevelopmental progress of infants discharged from the ICN. Infants who are followed for growth and development include those weighing less than 1500 grams at birth, infants requiring ECMO treatment, infants receiving fetal surgical intervention and other at-risk infants.
The program provides parent support after discharge, early identification of developmental disabililties and referral for service if indicated, liaison with community physicians and agencies involved with the care of the ICN graduate and information on outcome to enhance the care of infants currently in the ICN.
The core staff consists of a neonatologist trained in developmental and behavioral pediatrics, a psychologist, a nurse, a coordinator and a physical therapy consultant.
History of the Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) Follow-Up Program
The Follow-Up Program at UCSF was developed by Dr. William Tooley in 1964. It was set up to closely monitor the outcome of infants who had been exposed to pioneering advances in perinatal medicine. The UCSF ICN was among the first to provide mechanical ventilation for premature infants, as well as to care for infants who suffered from erythroblastosis fetalis and who required intrauterine transfusions.
Time and technology have brought changes, and the focus of the program expanded over time to the neurodevelopmental follow-up of high risk infants: infants with significant prematurity and infants with significant medical/surgical conditions requiring developmental surveillance over the first few years.
