Thomas Shimotake, MD

Dr. Thomas Shimotake is a neonatologist (a specialist in the care of newborns). He is medical director of the intensive care nursery at Mission Bay, where his patients include extremely premature infants and babies with severe birth defects. He has served as co-director of the UCSF Neuro-Intensive Care Nursery and director of the UCSF Fellowship Program in Neonatal-erinatal medicine.

Shimotake's research interests include neonatal lung diseases, such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (affecting premature infants) and respiratory distress syndrome (a breathing disorder affecting premature infants), as well as brain injury and repair in newborns. He has a long-standing interest in medical education and adopting new teaching technologies, such as simulation training to improve communication in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Shimotake is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of its neonatal-perinatal medicine section. He serves as President of the California Association of Neonatologists and its action arm the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative.
