Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program
The UCSF Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program combines exceptional clinical training with individualized mentorship, equipping graduates for impactful careers in academia, industry, and private practice.
About the Program
Established in 2012, the UCSF Allergy and Immunology Fellowship is a two-year, ACGME-accredited program that trains one pediatric and one internal medicine (or Med-Peds) fellow each year. A third year focused on research is strongly encouraged for those pursuing academic careers.
UCSF offers a unique, comprehensive training environment with robust clinical and research opportunities in both pediatric and adult Allergy/Immunology (A/I). Fellows benefit from strong collaborations with UCSF’s nationally ranked Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program, leadership in primary immunodeficiency treatment, and participation in NIH-sponsored asthma and drug allergy research networks.
Goals and Objectives
Our mission is to train exceptional, compassionate clinicians who advance the field of Allergy and Immunology through leadership and scholarly activity. To do this, the program provides:
-
Robust, comprehensive clinical training provides exposure to a wide range of pediatric and adult A/I cases that fosters excellence in both routine and highly complex care.
-
Diverse scholarly opportunities in basic, translational, clinical, quality improvement, and medical education research supported by NIH-funded investigators, a vibrant academic opportunity, and structured training in each area.
-
Longitudinal mentorship and individualized career development to support each fellow’s growth as a compassionate clinician, scholar, and leaders in A/I.
Curriculum
Fellows gain in-depth experience managing a broad spectrum of routine and complex pediatric and adult allergy/immunology cases through clinical training and clinical education.
Clinical Training
The adult and pediatric rotations provide a breadth of exposure to general A/I conditions, with additional subspecialty training on both sides. Additionally, pediatric training emphasizes inpatient management of primary immunodeficiency, complemented by outpatient pediatric experiences in immunodeficiency and food allergy. Adult training focuses on outpatient care with particular emphasis on diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for allergic rhinitis, drug allergy, venom hypersensitivity, and food allergy.
Year 1: Fellows in the pediatric and adult tracks each complete approximately 6 months of training in their primary discipline, 3-4 months in the complementary discipline, and 2 months dedicated to ambulatory and scholarly activity.
Year 2: Fellows in the pediatric and adult tracks each complete an additional 3 months of training in their primary discipline, and 9 months of clinic and scholarly research.
Year 3: Fellows who elect to stay an additional 3rd year will engage primarily in independent study.
There are 4 weeks of vacation each year.
