Education
The UCSF Adolescent Medicine Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited three-year program, which enables physicians to meet the eligibility criteria for Adolescent Medicine certification by the American Boards of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine. Our major objective is the development of regional, national, and international leaders in Adolescent Medicine. To achieve this goal, we have assembled a multidisciplinary team of educators and mentors to provide comprehensive training in the areas of clinical medicine, research, education, public policy, and quality improvement.

About the Program
The program emphasizes the need for expertise in caring for the complex medical problems of adolescents and young adults. As fellows spend time in our Adolescent & Young Adult Clinic, on our inpatient consultative service and inpatient eating disorder service, and a variety of community-based electives, they are exposed to a wide range of medical conditions facing adolescents and young adults, including reproductive issues, substance abuse, sports medicine, mental health, and eating disorders.
UCSF is the top public recipient of NIH research funding for the 6th consecutive year, and we provide rigorous training in research. We offer formal coursework through the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Fellows' College of the Department of Pediatrics. Research mentoring begins from day one of the fellowship, and research progress is overseen from within the division and by the Scholarship Oversight Committee. Fellows are expected to present their research findings at both regional and national meetings and submit their completed work for publication.
Our multidisciplinary faculty currently consists of nine physicians (7 pediatricians and 1 Internal Medicine/Pediatrician, and 1 Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist/Pediatrician), 4 psychologists, 1 nutritionist, 1 social worker, 2 doctors of public health, 1 nurse, and 1 nurse/biostatistician. In addition, we have associated faculty members in psychiatry, public health, addiction medicine, and sports medicine. Our faculty has been in leadership positions in every facet of adolescent medicine, both nationally and internationally, since the late 1970s.
Goals and Objectives
The UCSF Adolescent Medicine Fellowship aims to:
- Cultivate clinical excellence in caring for adolescents and young adults with complex medical and psychosocial needs.
- Provide rigorous, mentored research training to prepare fellows for academic and policy leadership roles.
- Support fellows in becoming effective educators and advocates in adolescent health.
- Offer interdisciplinary training that reflects the full spectrum of adolescent care, from primary to subspecialty services.
- Prepare fellows to engage in health equity work, public health, and systems-level transformation.
Our ultimate goal is to graduate physicians who will advance adolescent health through compassionate care, scholarship, and advocacy — locally, nationally, and globally.
