Education
The UCSF Division of General Pediatrics offers a two-year fellowship in clinical research to prepare general pediatricians to become faculty scientists conducting high impact research in health services research, health equity, global health sciences, bioinformatics, and policy.
During the program, fellows will spend one day per week in a clinical setting aligned with their research interests, including primary care, acute care and/or newborn nursery. Their remaining time will be devoted to learning scientific skills and conducting mentored research. All fellows are assigned one or more senior research mentors aligned with their interests and skills.
About the Program
Our core faculty are dedicated to training the next generation of investigators and offer expertise across a broad range of research and clinical areas. The program connects fellows with relevant mentorship and collaboration opportunities available at the Department of Pediatrics and UCSF.
Focus areas available for the 2025-27 academic cycle include:
- Equity & Justice: Develop a research program to identify social, economic, and environmental factors that contribute to disparities in child health outcomes with mentorship from Dr. Naomi Bardach, Professor of Pediatrics and Health Policy Studies and Vice Chair of Health Services Research and Dr. Amy Beck, Associate Professor of Pediatrics.
- Global Health: Conduct pilot work in collaboration with our partner organizations in low- and middle-income countries with mentorship from Dr. Valerie Flaherman, Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Study activities and travel to be arranged in consultation with individual fellows.
- Digital Health: Explore topics in mobile health applications or health informatics with mentorship from Dr. Naomi Bardach, Professor of Pediatrics and Health Policy Studies and Vice Chair of Health Services Research.
- Transitions of Care: Examine adolescent transitions from pediatric to adult providers through a pilot project with mentorship from Dr. Megumi Okumura, Professor of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Health Policy. She is also Medical Director for UCSF Health’s Pediatric to Adult Transitions.
