Inpatient Consult Service
The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Inpatient Service provides consultation for infants and children with suspected or known infections throughout UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco. We manage conditions ranging from community-acquired infections to opportunistic infections in immunocompromised children. We also provide telephone consultation to clinicians throughout Northern California who seek advice on diagnosis and management of infections.
Outpatient Clinic
The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Outpatient Clinic provides evaluation, coordination of care, and treatment for a variety of infections, including but not limited to bone and joint infections, lymphadenitis, Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis), tuberculosis, fever of unknown origin, and travel-associated infections. There are two half day clinics per week located at the Gateway Clinical Building adjacent to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco. Follow-up via telemedicine is available for patients who live at a distance. Providers looking to make a referral should seek further information from the UCSF Benioff Patient Referral Procedures.
Pediatric HIV Care Program
UCSF has operated a Pediatric HIV Care Program since the beginning of the epidemic, caring for some of the very first cases ever described. In coordination with the Pediatric Immunology, the Pediatric HIV Program offers multidisciplinary care of HIV-infected children from infancy into young adulthood. The Pediatric HIV Program is led by Theodore Ruel and includes nurses, social workers with access to neuropsychology, nutrition and specialty pharmacology services as needed. In addition to providing long-term longitudinal care to children living with HIV, we also follow infants exposed to HIV, and provide antenatal consultations to pregnant women seeking to develop care plans.
Immunocompromised Host Program
Pediatric ID clinicians provide support to the transplant and immunocompromised services at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco, including pre-transplant evaluation and counseling, evaluation and treatment of opportunistic infections, and development of strategies to prevent and monitor for opportunistic infections. UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital has a busy pediatric bone marrow transplant program as well as kidney, liver, and heart transplant programs. Our team provides expert consultation on infectious disease issues that arise in transplant recipients. Antimicrobial Stewardship Program
The Pediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco monitors appropriate use of antimicrobial agents and develops interventions to improve antimicrobial use in infants and children. The goals of the program are to improve clinical outcomes while reducing unfavorable consequences of antimicrobial use. The following resources developed by the Pediatric ASP are available online:
