Jenise Wong, MD, PhD

My research goal is to improve outcomes for people with diabetes through optimal use of diabetes technologies. Management of diabetes is difficult, with self-management and adherence changing as a child progresses from childhood through adolescence and young adulthood. Tools that assist patients with diabetes are constantly emerging, which range from devices for insulin delivery, such as insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices, and automated insulin delivery systems, to mobile phone and internet applications designed to improve self-management and provide support. My goal is to understand and optimize the use of technology to improve clinical, behavioral, and patient-centered outcomes in youth with diabetes. With formal training in basic science and clinical research, I have expertise in quantitative and qualitative methods, as well as quality improvement methodology. My research group has investigated insulin pump and CGM use, barriers to use, and reasons for device discontinuation in type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). We have explored individual, family, clinic, and system factors that influence use of technology, including social determinants of health. We have conducted pilot clinical trials of diabetes device visualization software and devices, and we reported feasibility of using new tools. In my current work, we are exploring factors in youth with diabetes that contribute to less optimal outcomes, focusing on patients and families experiencing chronic health conditions and social vulnerabilities, most of whom are racially and/or ethnically marginalized and publicly insured. We are also currently investigating the feasibility of initiating hybrid closed-loop technology in publicly insured children with T1D. In addition, we are working with collaborators at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and University of California Davis to improve education and use of diabetes technology among Latinx adolescents, through the use of virtual peer groups. All of this work will lead to more consistent, sustained use of diabetes device technology and improvements in clinical and patient-centered outcomes in young people with diabetes.

In addition to my research, I am an Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program. I am also the Director of Quality and Safety for Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology at Benioff Children's Hospital - San Francisco.
