Graduate Medical Education Programs
The UCSF Department of Pediatrics and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals are dedicated to training excellent clinicians to meet the needs of children in our communities and around the world. Our residency and fellowship programs are among the highest-ranked programs in the country due to the breadth of clinical training, the extensive opportunities to pursue scholarly work, and the exposure to thought leaders who are shaping the future of pediatric medicine.
Residency Training Programs
We offer two different categorical residency training programs located in San Francisco and Oakland. Whether you envision a career in primary care or as a pediatric subspecialist, in academic medicine or in community practice, as a physician-scientist or as a full-time clinician, we have programs that meet your needs. Our committed teams of educators work collaboratively to support each resident in refining and achieving their goals.
We also offer several special training pathways that serve as dedicated training opportunities for health equity leaders, child neurologists, pediatric geneticists, and other physician-scientists.
How do you choose?
Both programs:
- Are medium-size and have a long history of training clinicians, leaders, and child-health advocates who excel in a variety of academic and community-oriented careers.
- Emphasize health equity, advocacy, and trainee wellbeing.
- Offer individualized training experiences and strong mentorship to ensure trainees meet their goals.
San Francisco
The San Francisco-based residency program is under the UCSF Department of Pediatrics and is particularly suited for trainees who desire broad clinical experience as they rotate through different sites. Residents get the opportunity to work with fellows and attendings in almost every subspecialty, making this program a great choice for those who want to get a sense of what a subspecialty career entails as a fellow and beyond.
UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco is a quaternary center known for its large neonatal heart surgery program, solid organ transplant programs, pediatric pulmonary hypertension center, and pediatric stroke center. Destination programs across many specializations attract patients from all over the country.
Oakland
The Oakland-based residency program is strongly embedded in the local community.
Falling under UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, residents do almost all of their rotations on one campus, serving the diverse population of Oakland that includes a significant proportion of children from traditionally under-resourced groups. The program’s emphasis on generalist training provides a strong foundation for general pediatricians and specialists alike.
UCSF Benioff Oakland is a level 1 trauma center for children and has a very busy pediatric emergency medicine program. It is known for its state-of-the-art hematologic diseases program, innovative pediatric rehabilitation program, and extensive community-oriented programs that address health inequities and promote child health.
Fellowship Training Programs
We offer fellowship training in almost every pediatric subspecialty and pride ourselves on a strong record of training excellent subspecialists who go on to become physician-scientists, clinical innovators, medical educators, academic leaders, and more.
Through our focused career development program, Fellows’ College, and strong mentorship structures, we provide individualized training to meet each fellow’s career goals and needs while creating a community among fellows for mutual support and camaraderie.
